About Ayurveda
ayurveda’s ancient history and wisdom for today
The History of Ayurveda
Ayurveda, the Sanskrit word for the science of life, is possibly the oldest health care system in the world. Rooted in the ancient Vedic culture of the Indus Valley, this timeless tradition has endured centuries of colonization and cultural suppression.
More recently, between about 1500 to 1850, power over this region was extremely volatile and shifting. Anti-Hindu and anti-Buddhist crusades set many of the ancient Ayurvedic texts and cultural artifacts ablaze. By 1850, the British took control of the territory, closed Ayurvedic educational institutions and forbade its practice.
And yet, Ayurveda lives on.
Its wisdom has been preserved through a rich oral lineage, passed from teacher to student for generations. Today, Ayurveda is practiced around the globe and has influenced many other healing systems, including Traditional Chinese Medicine.
The Roots of Ayurveda
At its core, Ayurveda is a preventative science. It seeks to keep the body, mind, and spirit in harmony with the natural rhythms of the earth. It teaches that dis-ease often begins in the gut, and prioritizes early intervention through simple, personalized routines involving food, herbs, and lifestyle rituals. When our digestion is strong, our entire system flourishes.
Ayurveda works by restoring balance. It recognizes that we each have a unique constitution, known as our prakruti, established at conception. This constitution is a personal blueprint based on the three doshas: Vata (air + ether), Pitta (fire + water), and Kapha (earth + water). Our individual doshic makeup influences everything from digestion to emotional tendencies. Health is simply living in alignment with this original blueprint. When we veer from that balance, we experience vikruti, a state of imbalance that can manifest as physical or emotional symptoms. Ayurveda addresses these imbalances with tailored recommendations to support your body’s natural ability to heal, starting at the cellular level.
Why Ayurveda Works
Central to Ayurveda is the idea of aligning our habits with nature’s rhythms. Our circadian rhythm, governed by the sun, dictates when digestion is strongest, when the body detoxifies, and when we need rest. As the sun rises, our digestive fire rises. It peaks at midday, and slows as the sun sets. Ayurveda teaches us to honor these daily and seasonal shifts, allowing our bodies to function with greater ease and vitality.
In today’s world, this can feel challenging. Even health-conscious individuals often feel ungrounded and overstimulated. We’re exposed to toxins, we’re under-rested, overworked, and rarely given space to truly replenish. Chronic stress has become the norm.
So, how do we live well in a world that often pushes us out of balance?
That’s where Ayurveda becomes a powerful tool. Its principles are simple, practical, and intuitive. It’s less about learning something new and more about remembering what your body already knows. And while these shifts may not always be easy, they are always worth it.
In our initial consultation, we’ll explore your unique constitution, current imbalances, and the root cause of your symptoms. From there, we’ll build a plan to restore balance in a way that supports your daily life.
